Weetbix Try 2017

This year College Street had over 200 children in the Weetbix Try down at Ongley Park and the Lido. Lots of COLAB kids went down to have some fun in the sun! Check out some of the photos from the day.
Thanks Mrs Tremain for making it such an awesome day!

Water Safety at The Lido

This week COLAB started water safety lessons at the Lido. Each sport group was divided into three groups based on our skills and confidence.

On Monday (our first lesson) we lined up outside to wait for the bus. We waited and waited and waited, after about 15-20 minutes the bus finally arrived. Unfortunately we were late to the Lido as the bus took a while to come. But it turned out okay- we still all had a turn and learned something new.

We were in 3 groups at the pool depending on our confidence in the water.

When we got in the pool we started to swim to the end of the pool with a flutter board and then on our backs. This lesson was just a warm up so that the swim instructors could see our ability. We were going to learn some harder skills the next day.

On Tuesday we did our second lesson in the outside pool. Group 1 went in the lane pool, Group 2 and Group 3 went in the diving pool. Group 1 got to make waves with flutter boards and then swim through the waves. Group 2 learned how to tread water and what to do if you fall into water. Group 3 wore lifejackets, learned what to do if boat capsized, including huddling as a group.

On Thursday we used buckets to float on the the water. Then we did some diving and freestyle. At the end we did some diving for rings.

We all got more confident in the water and learned some new skills on how to keep safe in different situations. Thanks Mr R for providing us with this awesome opportunity - especially before camp when we were going to be in the water!

Triathlon Day

On Wednesday the 15th of February, College Street Normal School was buzzing with excitement because it was our annual triathlon. It was a huge event! Before school there were oceans of people and it was chaotic. 600 hundred kids were involved in the event. We were lucky that Golden Fresh, an Orchard in Hawke's Bay, generously sponsored us by providing free apple snappz and bottles of water for every participant, teachers and parents. They also kindly gave us sports equipment and spot prizes. We were so grateful.

We lined up between the big walnut trees. Everyone was bobbing up and down with excitement. We were waiting for the buzzer to go and all of our legs were shaking like an earthquake. BANG! And just like that we were off!

The first leg of the race started with a run. We knew we had to keep our pace. We had to sprint out of the school gate. We stampeded down the walkway to Marne Street then along Karaka Street. After completing the run, we ran as fast as we could through a sea of bikes frantically searching until we found ours. Before we kicked off the bike leg, crammed our head into our helmet. We had to complete two circuits of our rather large field. Our legs felt like jelly, but we still had fun, and we wore a brave smile. Thankfully, there was only the swim left to achieve, before we got to relax. The pool was freezing, but we were boiling. It was refreshing, reviving, and restoring to the soul.

Do you know how good it felt to have accomplished something as challenging as this? It felt amazing! Thank you to all the people who contributed to this event. We also would like to say thank you to all the parents that were involved in the triathlon by coming along to watch. What a fabulous day at College Street Normal School!

Amazing Race

3, 2, 1, Go! The race has begun. Each and every group looked through the booklet of challenges. We had one afternoon to complete six challenges. They were:
  • Bucket Challenge
  • Tower Build
  • Crossword
  • CSNS Photo Booth
  • Art Activity
  • Blindfold maze
We raced of to our first challenge. Each challenge had a twist. At the bucket challenge every bucket had holes in them, at the blindfold maze you couldn't touch the rope and for the art activity you only had 20 seconds each to paint. At the CSNS photo booth challenge we had to come up with a slogan for learning. For the tower build we could only use cellotape and newspaper. Check out our video below!
